A small Mediterranean archipelago with a population of about 440,000, Malta is an EU and Eurozone member state and part of the Schengen area. A former British colony, it is a common law jurisdiction with a British education system and English as an official language.
The entire process of a citizenship application ordinarily takes between 14 and 18 months to complete. A passport will not be issued prior to the 1 year residency being completed. The residence permit is obtained through the purchase or rent of immovable property in Malta. The applicant need not physically reside in Malta during this period.
The citizenship application will be lodged during the 1 year residency. Successful applicant will typically receive their Approval in Principle some 4 months later, at which point they will need to complete the required investments and to swear an oath of allegiance prior to formally obtaining Maltese citizenship.
In addition to fulfilling a great number of documentation requirements, all applicants must be in good standing and have a criminal record devoid of serious crimes. They are also required to have global health insurance covering up to EUR 50,000 in medical expenses.
